“Spring Awakening” is a coming-of-age, contemporary rock musical based on the 1891 play of the same name by Frank Wedekind. Set in 19th century Germany, the teens of “Spring Awakening” explore attraction, desire, sex, insecurity, and the pressures of young adult life against a backdrop of a strict moral code that leads to tragedy. Winner of eight 2007 Tony Awards® including Best Musical, “Spring Awakening” transformed the Broadway genre with its explosive mix of music, honesty, and sexuality.
Director’s Vision
Spring Awakening seems as current now as when it first arrived in 2008 and when Franz Wedekind wrote the source material, The Awakening of Spring (Frulings Erwachen) in 1890-1891. As a director, truthful storytelling is the most important aspect of any piece of art to me. I am not looking to repeat the rock concert concept and use handheld mics as the Broadway production did. I am looking to flesh out the complexity of these characters through every song and scene. I am looking for artists to really dig into duality of being an adolescent and how every choice can affect our future. This quote encompasses the show to me: "Once you add black paint to your bottle of white, it won’t matter how much more white you try to add - you’ll always be left with gray.” Puberty is a point in which we often learn the world is not fair and that choices have consequences. Christine Negherbon Abraham, Director
