Itchy Bugs have invaded Joy’s town. School is closed. The talent show is canceled. 28 days of lock down and pudding baths are ordered to combat the plague. Joy doesn’t know what to do. She is frightened, anxious, uncertain. Things are very scary and weird. And what do you do when you are frightened, anxious, uncertain? When things are scary and weird and you don’t know what to do? You call Glory Chicken - Superhero in the battle against fear and uncertainty. With their five step patented process, Glory Chicken will teach you how to be cool and kind when things are scary and weird. Glory Chicken. Everything’s gonna be all right.

About the Playwright:
Sigrid Gilmer* (playwright) makes black comedies that are historically bent, totally perverse, joyfully irreverent and deal with issues of identity, pop culture and contemporary American society. Sigrid’s Harry and the Thief - an action film/historical/time travel play about a thief who is blackmailed into traveling back in time to deliver a cache of arms to Harriet Tubman - has been produced across the country,including Pavement Group (Chicago), the Know Theatre (Cincinnati), and the Skylight Theatre (LA). Additional plays include: Slavey (Clubbed Thumb), Seed: A Weird Act of Faith, It’s All Bueno (Cornerstone Theater Company), Mama Metal (IAMA Theatre Co). Sigrid is a USA Artist Fellow and this year’s resident playwright of BOFLTE Her TV and film work includes: Claws (TNT) and Gossip Girl (HBO Max). Killy Whitey (Hideout Pictures). Sigrid has an MFA in Writing for Performance from Cal Arts and lives in Los Angeles.
About this Production:
This is a production of California State University of Fullerton (CSUF) Studios Series and presented at Grand Central Arts Central Theater which is dedicated to creating transformative theatre that reflects and celebrates the diverse voices of Santa Ana and Orange County. We aim to connect artists and audiences through innovative productions, nurture emerging talent and students, and inspire our community with stories that provoke thought, spark conversation, and foster empathy.” This is a new play development and commission as part of the TYA BIPOC SUPER HERO PROJECT. And presented through a partnership through the Theatre Dept of California State Fullerton University and with Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble (BOFLTE) a production community partner and resident artist of Grand Central Arts Center (GCAC). The workshop’s heightened staged reading (fall semester) and final production (spring semester) run will both take place at GCAC in downtown Santa Ana. The TYA BIPOC SUPER HERO PROJECTt, a new initiative led by playwright and educator José Casas*, designed to give playwrights of color more access to mainstream/regional TYA theatres. In an effort the TYA/USA is calling the largest and most comprehensive partnership of theatres ever undertaken in the field, 20+ playwrights of color will be commissioned by 27 theatres and nonprofit organizations. All the commissioned works will feature stories of BIPOC superheroes, and the project will culminate in a 3 year-long celebration with productions, co-productions, and a published anthology of all the plays.
