This season, the students, faculty, and guest choreographers of “Spring Dance Theatre” reflect on their past, present, and future through unique perspectives. Commissioned as part of the Dance Repertory and Performance course, guest artist Sadie Weinberg’s “Zephyr Unfolding” is a whirlwind of fury, tenderness, and ferocity that asks “At what point does one sacrifice their own needs for a cause greater than oneself?” Muriel Joyce draws on her time studying dance in Belgium for “De la valse à l’amour,” inspired by the music of iconic Belgian singer Jacques Brel. Faculty Courtney Ozovek and Marty Austin Lamar collaborate with lighting design graduate student Alex Bennett in “Home,” with Bennett’s time in foster care providing a jumping off point for the trio as they explore the meaning of the word home. Graduating senior in dance, Erik Jaimes gives us “May 1959 | Los Angeles, CA,” weaving together themes of community with the wrenching history of Chavez Ravine, where hundreds of families were displaced in 1959 to make way for Dodger Stadium.
